Nash and Nowitzki: A Basketball Friendship

15 09 2011

Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki are both foreign-born basketball players who have made big marks during their careers in the NBA. Nash has been a prolfic point guard, leading the Suns to the playoffs year after year, but never making it to the NBA Finals. Nowitzki, on the other hand, made it to the Finals in 2006 and took a 2-0 lead against Shaq, D-Wade, and the Miami Heat. Amazingly, the Heat won 4 straight to take the title. Things looked grim for awhile as the Mavs struggled in the playoffs. However, Dirk perserved, worked on his game, and the Mavericks defeated the Evil Empire of the Heat this year in a great NBA Finals.

Many thought that the Suns would win the title during the 2006-2007 season. In a hotly contested and great series in the Western Semi-Finals, the Spurs and Heat were tied 2-2 when one play pssibly ruined Nash’s and the Suns golden chance at a Championship. Robert Horry pushed Nash into the scorer’s table, causing Raja Bell to react and go after Horry. This led to both Horry and Bell being suspended for a game and Nash had a broken nose and facial injuries. The Spurs went on to win the series 4-2. They eventually won their 4th NBA title by defeating a young Lebron James and the Cavaliers in an easy and quite boring NBA finals.

Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki played together in Dallas from 1998 until 2004. They quickly became good friends and built great chemistry together to become a dangerous duo. Unfortunately, they did not win a Chip. Many analysts expected Nash to win a Championship with the Suns. While Dirk was down after losing to the Heat in 2006, Nash was running the fast break with the Suns and winning tons of games. The tables turned after the Suns lost to the Spurs in 2007. After three years of frustration for both players, Dirk Nowitzki finally led the Mavs to a championship in 2011. The two still remain great friends, and the lesson learned here is you never know what will happen. Nobody gave the Mavs a shot this past year, but they ran through the playoffs on their way to the title with ease. We hear at all All Dunks certainly hope Nash gets his well-deserved ring, but things don’t look good. However, as the saying goes, “You Never Know What Could Happen”. This phrase is especially true in the NBA.

Josh Smith Has INSANE Hops!!

14 09 2011

Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks is quite a player. He came straight out high school with a ridiculous vertical leap and has continued to get better every year. While he has a jumper now, we are going to focus on what he does best, which is running the floor and dunking! Here is a video of Josh Smith’s 100 best dunks. I’m sure there will be more to come as long as there as is a season this year (I’m lookin at you Stern!!)

Brandon Jennings:The Road Less Traveled

29 11 2009

The young rookie Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks has been on a tear in his NBA rookie campaign, currently averaging 23 points, 4 rebounds, and  5.5 assists per game. His speed is dazzling, his shot is pure, and he constantly gets his team involved . While he has been on a downslide his last three games, only averaging around 13 points a run, there is no denying the amazing talent and composure that the 20 year old Jennings possesses.

Many critics around the basketball world did not agree with Jennings’ decision to play a year in Europe rather than attend a university for one year before being eligible for the NBA draft.  These people said he was missing out on an important part of life in skipping college and would later regret his decision. What these people did not realize is that college for these one year players is a joke.  If you knew you were leaving college in six months to make millions in the league, would you give a full effort in the classroom? I doubt it. Most people would be working on their game, which is their future profession. Jennings decided to take the road less traveled and ended up benefiting greatly from it. While he did not get great minutes or put up monster numbers, he was in a structure similar to the NBA and played daily against grown men. I am sure the rigors of professional ball in Europe eased Jennings’ transition into the league and made him a more mature player and person.  A million or so Euros didn’t hurt his bankroll, either.

I applaud Brandon Jennings’ decision to play a year in Europe.  Some critics made it seem like he was ruining his career.  By the looks of his first few games, Jennings is going to be a star for a long time. The European scout for the Bucks probably got a fat raise and everyone in Milwaukee is happy.  The lefty assassin will turn the Bucks around and make them a solid contender in the East for years.  The different road that Jennings took to the NBA ended up working out perfectly for him.

Do you think Jennings made the right decision in playing in Europe for a year? Send me your comments !
